When you want to take your whole world with you, look no further than the Nextel i920. This Windows Mobile-powered smartphone (Windows Mobile for Smartphones 2003 Second Edition) is designed to keep you in touch in ways that few other phones can. It's got great features, too, like an SD memory card slot and support for international service. Add that to Nextel's legendary Direct Connect walkie-talkie services, and you've got an indispensable mobile companion.
Design
The i920 is no ordinary clamshell. Like other Nextel phones, it's built tough for construction and utilities industry users. The phone sports a very large 176 x 220 TFT color display with 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover features a supplementary color display that can show images, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more.
A speakerphone unit is located on the rear of the phone, while the trademark Direct Connect and menu scrolling functions can be controlled from the side of the phone. The phone's control pad also features a five-way button that can control most of the phone's functions. A small button on the hinge of the phone's flip mechanism automatically opens the phone for quick access-- a real plus if you have your hands full. A standard headset jack and a USB-compatible data port are also provided.
As mentioned, the i920 sports a slot for an SD memory card so you can store music, games and other files on the removable memory, making it possible to take all the files you need with you.
Calling Features
The i920 has all the latest calling features folks have come to expect. The built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Vibrate modes and custom WAV and MP3 ringtones can also be set to your preferences so you know who is calling without having to look at the LCD. The included Pocket Outlook software features a contacts list that is cleverly integrated with the phone's dialing functions. The i870's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
One of the key features of any Nextel phone is support for Nextel's Direct Connect walkie-talkie technology. The i920 fully supports the service, which allows for one-touch conversations with anyone else on a Nextel phone. It's like a having a CB radio with enough range to cover all of North America. The i920 also features a walkie-talkie private speaker button. This switches from the external speaker to the earpiece for private conversations or to minimize disruptions in quiet environments.
With the i920, Nextel has thought of those who travel frequently. Thanks to an integrated GSM radio, you can use the phone on international GSM networks with an optional Nextel Worldwide service plan. GSM-based data services can also be accessed when you travel in parts of North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Designed as a complete solution for people who want to bring their office with them, the i920 comes packed with pocket versions of Outlook, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger. In addition to keeping track of contacts, Pocket Outlook features integrated calendar and email functions. Email support is provided for IMAP and POP3 accounts, as well as corporate accounts. Microsoft's ActiveSync software keeps the device synced with all of your PC's Outlook information (via USB or infrared connection). Plus, with a Nextel Data Unlimited pack, you can get unlimited data transfers from the Nextel network -- great for those times when you want to connect your laptop or PDA to your i920 and surf the Web or check your email.
You can use the i920's built in Internet Explorer browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. Nextel's optional data packages allow you to read and send e-mails, exchange instant messages and view your favorite web content on your phone. The service also features games, ringtones, realtime news and sports updates, virtual address books, and more-- all delivered to your Nextel phone. Traditional text messaging, as well as MMS-based video, picture and sound messaging are also supported by the phone. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the i920 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar, a to-do list, and an alarm clock.
Imaging and Entertainment
The inclusion of Windows Media Player on the i920 means that you can use the handset as an MP3 and video player, as well. The amount of music and video you can store is only limited by the memory available on the SD expansion card.
The phone is also compatible with a number of Java applications available from Nextel. Choose TeleNav for GPS-based audible driving directions or Mobile Locator for finding the location of a friend or loved-one's phone (both require a subscription). You can also take a break or organize your schedule with some included games and applications. More Windows Mobile game and application downloads are available from Nextel.
